Upcoming Opportunities for Generator Owners and Operators to Prepare for New IBR Standard Requirements

By Eric Graftaas, MRO Principal Power Systems Engineer

As the electric industry continues to integrate inverter-based resources (IBRs) into the bulk power system, new NERC Reliability Standards are approaching mandatory compliance dates in 2026 and 2027. To help registered entities prepare, NERC, in collaboration with the Regional Entities (collectively known as the ERO Enterprise), will host a series of Small Group Advisory Sessions (SGAS) focused on key IBR-related requirements.

The sessions will provide Generator Owners (GOs) and Generator Operators (GOPs) with an opportunity to better understand compliance expectations associated with Reliability Standards PRC-028-1, PRC-029-1, PRC-030-1, and MOD-026-2, including upcoming phased implementation requirements.

Participants can engage through two SGAS formats: a public general session webinar and closed, one-on-one advisory sessions with ERO Enterprise staff.

General Session Webinar

Scheduled for August 10, 2026, from 2:00–3:30 p.m. Eastern, NERC and Regional Entity staff will discuss current and future implementation activities related to the new IBR standards. The webinar is open to all interested industry participants (registration for a one-on-one session is not required to participate). A link to register will be provided soon on NERC’s website.

NERC is requesting industry questions related to compliance with the above referenced standards. Questions submitted by June 30, 2026, will help shape the discussion during the General Session Webinar and ensure the topics most important to industry are addressed.

Please send any questions to [email protected] and include SGAS for New IBR Related Standard Requirements Questions in the email Subject Line.

One-on-One Advisory Sessions

From August 11–14, 2026, NERC and Regional Entity staff will conduct closed virtual meetings with registered entities to discuss organization-specific questions and compliance considerations. These sessions offer a valuable and unique opportunity to engage directly with ERO Enterprise subject matter experts and gain clarity on implementation challenges before compliance obligations become effective.

Because space is limited, one-on-one sessions will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.  Registration is free and required by close of business, June 19, 2026

To register for a one-on-one session, send a request to [email protected]. Please include Registration Request – SGAS for New IBR Related Standard Requirements in the Subject Line.

Include the following information with the request:

  • Requestor name, title and contact information
  • Company Name and NCR(s)
  • Region(s) Registered in
  • Provide contact information for someone at each entity If the requestor is representing multiple entities
  • Preferred date and time for appointment (morning/afternoon)

Don’t Miss this Opportunity!

MRO encourages Category I and Category 2 IBR GOs and GOPs to take advantage of this opportunity to engage with NERC and Regional Entity staff, gain insight into upcoming requirements, and support a smooth transition to compliance with the new IBR standards.
