Inverter-Based Resources (IBR) Webinar

This webinar, held on August 13, 2025, focused on the role of Inverter-Based Resources (IBRs) in contributing to a resilient and sustainable future energy landscape. As part of NERC’s IBR Strategy, MRO is committed to identifying and addressing challenges associated with IBRs, sharing risk mitigation techniques with industry, and providing best practices and outreach. With IBRs rapidly becoming an impactful percentage of the generation mix, this session provided valuable information on risks associated with the integration of IBRs into the bulk power system, as well as important registration and compliance considerations for Category 2 IBR Generator Owners and Operators.

Topics covered included:

  • The background and drivers behind the IBR Strategy, including key reliability gaps and FERC directives
  • NERC’s phased work plan to address IBR risks
  • Overview of the IBR registration process
  • Compliance and standards updates from NERC
  • IBR reliability risks, including recent trends and mitigation strategies
  • Continued efforts to engage and support industry through education and outreach

Speakers:

  • Bryan Clark, Director of Reliability Analysis, MRO – Background on the IBR strategy
  • Eric Graftaas, Power Systems Engineer, MRO – Risks associated with IBRs
  • Summer Stephens, Senior Reliability Specialist, Organization Registration and Certification Program Lead – IBR registration work plan and process overview
  • Sandhya Madan, Manager of Standards Development, NERC – NERC standards related to IBRs
