Call for Nominations: MRO’s Annual HERO Award

Midwest Reliability Organization (MRO) shares an important mission with industry to identify, prioritize, and assure effective and efficient mitigation of risks to the reliability and security of the North American bulk power system. We advance our mission by promoting Highly Effective Reliability Organizations® (or HEROs), which are companies that remain resilient in complex, interdependent, and high-risk environments—like bulk power system operations.

The HERO Award honors individuals who demonstrate exceptional leadership and commitment to shaping a highly reliable, secure, and resilient power grid. Each year, we invite MRO members, registered entities, and industry stakeholders to recognize a colleague who embodies and inspires the following HERO behaviors:

  1. Preoccupation with Failure and Risk: Proactively identify and address potential failures, encourage transparency, and ask tough questions.
  2. Reluctance to Simplify Interpretation: Embrace complexity, investigate thoroughly, and challenge assumptions.
  3. Sensitivity to Operations: Understand how systems truly function, promote teamwork, and empower others to speak up.
  4. Commitment to Resilience: Share resilient practices, assess mitigation efforts, and foster continuous learning.
  5. Deference to Expertise: Value technical truth, listen to frontline experts, and strengthen regional collaboration.

These attributes are based on the theory and principles of high reliability organizations, which provide the foundation for MRO’s HERO program.

Do you know an individual who exemplifies the spirit of a HERO and has made impactful strides in enhancing grid reliability and security? Submit your nomination today and be part of honoring those who elevate our industry!

Nominations will be accepted through July 31, 2025.

The award winner will be selected by the board’s Organizational Group Oversight Committee and will be celebrated during MRO’s Annual Member and Board Meeting on December 4, 2025.
