The changing resource mix and lower fuel prices for natural gas have caused generator owners to replace aging or high cost large generating units with renewable resources and smaller units fueled by natural gas. The energy previously produced by large rotating generators is being replaced by energy produced by variable resources, and other new types of resources, some of which exhibit different operational characteristics. It is essential that planners and operators of the bulk electric system prepare for the changing resource mix.
